How many CE hours do I need to renew an LMFT, LCSW, or LPCC license in California?

You need 36 hours of CE from a BBS-accepted provider, completed during your 2-year renewal period. The BBS has one set of renewal rules for LMFTs, LCSWs, and LPCCs. See the BBS renewal checklist on the home page.

What is different about my first renewal?

At the first renewal only, LMFTs, LCSWs, and LPCCs also need 7 hours of HIV/AIDS coursework, such as California HIV/AIDS Assessment and Treatment. Instead of HIV/AIDS, LEPs need child abuse assessment and reporting (7 hours) and alcoholism and chemical dependency (15 hours). First-renewal courses count toward your 36 hours only if you take them during your renewal period.

Is Law and Ethics required every renewal?

Yes. LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs need 6 hours of law and ethics every renewal, and those hours count toward your 36. California Law and Ethics for Mental Health Clinicians is always included in the $69 bundle.

Is telehealth training a one-time requirement?

Yes. The BBS requires 3 hours of telehealth training once, by your first renewal after July 1, 2023. California Telehealth: Law, Ethics, and Practice meets the BBS 3-hour telehealth training requirement.

Who needs the one-time suicide risk training?

The BBS requires 6 hours of suicide risk assessment and intervention coursework once if you renew or reactivate after January 1, 2021. It is not needed if you already submitted proof with your license application. Like other one-time courses, it counts toward your 36 hours only if you take it during your renewal period.

What do I need before I supervise for the first time?

New supervisors need 15 hours of initial supervisor training first. Supervision: California Initial Supervisor Training covers all 15 in one course for $49 and is not part of the $69 bundle. After that, supervisors need 6 hours of supervision CE every renewal.

Do these CAMFT-approved courses count for the BBS?

California Counselor CEUs (John Oliver Ycaro, LPCC #9132) is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs. Each course meets the qualifications for continuing education credit as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences when you complete its required hours, post-test, and evaluation.

How much does CE renewal cost?

Each course has one flat price for the whole course, shown on its card in the course list, not a price per credit hour. Each state’s bundle is a one-time payment, not a yearly subscription: $69 for 36 CE hours in California, Texas, and Washington, and $69 for 40 Oregon hours in Oregon. How much does California LMFT, LCSW, and LPCC CE cost online?

$69 for 36 CE hours in one bundle, the 36 hours California LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs need each two-year renewal, or $9 or $19 per course. The bundle costs $80, $60.99, $20.99, and $20 less than those plans.

How fast does my certificate arrive?

Your certificate comes by email within 1 business day after you pass the post-test and complete the evaluation. There is no account or login.

How many CE hours do I need to renew in Texas?

Texas requires 24 hours for LPCs, 30 hours for LMFTs, and 30 hours for LCSWs or LMSWs each renewal, including 6 hours of ethics. Supervisors (LPC-S, LMFT-S, LCSW-S) also need 6 hours of supervision CE each renewal. The bundle is $69 for 36 CE hours, and the Texas CE page lists the required courses.

How many CE hours do I need to renew in Oregon?

Oregon LPCs and LMFTs need 6 hours of ethics and Oregon law every renewal and 4 cultural competency hours, counted in Oregon hours (6,000 words of instructional reading per hour). The Oregon bundle is $69 for 40 Oregon hours. The Oregon CE page lists the required courses.

How many CE hours do I need to renew in Washington?

Washington asks LMHCs, LMFTs, and LICSWs for 32 hours every two years, including 6 hours of ethics and law, 2 hours of professional roles and boundaries, and 2 hours of health equity every four years. The bundle is $69 for 36 CE hours, and it includes the two Washington ethics and boundaries courses. If you’re unsure, check the Washington CE page and the Department of Health.
