About this course
Washington asks associates to complete at least 2 hours in professional roles and boundaries, separate from the ethics and law hours (WAC 246-809-632(3)), and licensed counselors to include 2 roles and boundaries hours in their 32 hours every two years (WAC 246-809-630(3)(b)). This course is written for that requirement. It covers boundary crossings versus violations, power and responsibility, dual and multiple relationships, small and rural communities, gifts, self-disclosure, touch, social media and online contact, the supervisor and associate relationship, the permanent sexual misconduct prohibition, and documenting boundary decisions, with worked examples and a composite case.
Washington accepts distance learning approved by an industry-recognized organization when it ends with a test of comprehension (WAC 246-809-610(3)(b)). This course is from a CAMFT-approved provider and ends with a 15-question post-test. It is a roles and boundaries course, so it does not count toward the separate 6 hours of professional ethics and law (WAC 246-809-632(2)).
CE credit is awarded after you complete the reading, pass the post-test at 70% or higher, and complete the evaluation.
Learning objectives
After completing this course, you will be able to:
- State the Washington roles and boundaries CE requirement for associates and licensed counselors, and distinguish a boundary crossing from a boundary violation.
- Explain how the power differential places responsibility for boundaries on the clinician, including under WAC 246-16-100(7).
- Apply the ACA Code standards on previous relationships, extending boundaries, role changes, and bartering, and manage unavoidable overlap in small and rural communities.
- Use the ACA Code gift factors, apply purposeful self-disclosure, and make careful touch decisions consistent with WAC 246-16-100.
- Apply ACA Code social media standards and Washington's rule on using health care information to contact a client.
- Identify who may not serve as an approved supervisor and describe the associate's transparency and disclosure duties in supervision.
- State Washington's permanent prohibition on sexual misconduct with current and former clients and key parties, connect boundary violations to RCW 18.130.180, and document boundary decisions.
