About this course
For licensed clinicians and associates in Oregon (LPCs and LMFTs), Texas, and Washington. A general core on recognizing abuse and neglect, responding to disclosure, documentation, and ethics, plus labeled sections on each of those states' reporting law.
Sections 1 to 3 apply in every state. Sections 4, 5, and 6 cover Oregon (ORS 419B), Texas (Family Code ch. 261), and Washington (RCW 26.44) reporting law, quoted from each state's official legislative website as read on October 17, 2026. It is not legal advice.
Topics:
- Why clinicians encounter child maltreatment, including in adult-only practices
- Ethics and the limits of confidentiality: what to tell clients at intake
- Physical, behavioral, and neglect indicators, and telling neglect apart from poverty
- Responding to a disclosure without leading questions, and when to stop asking
- Consultation, and why it never transfers your duty
- Documentation: exact words, questions asked, and reporting steps
- Oregon, Texas, and Washington: who reports, the standard, deadlines, where to report, immunity, and penalties
Six sections, with worked cases, FAQs, and key points. Color and Print Friendly PDFs.

- Identify physical and behavioral indicators of physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and emotional abuse.
- Distinguish the clinician's assessment role from the role of the forensic interviewer.
- Identify which mental health professionals are "public or private officials" required to report under Oregon law.
- Describe Oregon's definition of abuse, immunity for good faith reporters, and the penalty for failing to report.
- State the Texas professional reporting deadline and the rule against delegating the report.
- Explain how Washington's "social service counselor" definition brings mental health clinicians within the reporting duty.
