About this course

Every AMFT, ASW, and APCC needs at least 3 hours of California law and ethics CE in each yearly renewal period, even after passing the Law and Ethics Exam. This course is written for AMFTs, ASWs, and APCCs. It covers your registration and renewal, supervision and employment rules, scope and disclosure to clients, confidentiality and records, mandated reporting, the duty to protect, telehealth basics, and how to list your registration in ads.

CE credit is awarded after you complete the reading, pass the post-test at 70% or higher, and complete the evaluation.

Learning objectives

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the BBS priority of public protection and the expiration, renewal, and six-year limits on an associate registration, including the yearly law and ethics exam and three-hour CE requirement.
  2. Define supervision, apply the weekly direct supervisor contact rules, and identify the employment rules for associates, including the ban on independent contractor arrangements.
  3. Distinguish scope from competence, state what an associate must tell each client before services, and apply fee, boundary, and sexual misconduct rules.
  4. Distinguish confidentiality from privilege, respond correctly to a subpoena, describe a valid CMIA authorization, and explain how supervision affects disclosure and records.
  5. Apply California child, elder, and dependent adult abuse reporting rules, including the reasonable suspicion standard, timelines, and the personal nature of the duty.
  6. Apply the duty to protect under Civil Code 43.92, describe the WIC 8105 firearm report and 5150 holds, and identify permitted disclosures for suicide risk.
  7. Apply the BBS telehealth standards and the client location rule, and list what an associate's advertisement must include under 16 CCR 1811.
